Embroidery:
Directional Thread Reconstruction

This project began as an exploration of embroidery-like structures, but gradually evolved into a study of directional organization and procedural surface reconstruction.

Rather than replicating traditional embroidery techniques or visual styles, the system focuses on how thread-like structures can emerge from guide directions, vector fields, density variation, and layered flow behaviors.

The project combines manually designed directional guides with procedural generation systems to organize continuous linear structures across complex organic forms.

Research Focus

  • How can directional guide structures organize thread-like formations across complex shapes?

  • How can layered flow behaviors generate coherent surface structures?

  • How can procedural systems reconstruct image-like forms through accumulated linear elements?

System Workflow

  • Shape Segmentation

Complex forms are separated into multiple directional regions to establish controllable flow behavior across different structural areas.

  • Directional Guide Design

Guide curves are manually designed to define primary directional movement, local curvature, and structural hierarchy.

Different regions use distinct directional organizations, including radial, layered, and spiral flow structures.

  • Vector Field Construction

Directional guides are converted into continuous vector fields used to organize thread movement and local orientation.

  • Procedural Thread Generation

Thread-like structures are procedurally generated by advecting curves through directional fields, producing layered linear formations across the surface.

  • Surface Reconstruction

Through density accumulation, overlap, and directional continuity, linear elements gradually reconstruct image-like surfaces and organic structures.

Directional Structures

The system investigates multiple directional organizations:

  • Radial Flow

  • Spiral Flow

  • Layered Direction

  • Boundary Following

  • Gradient Transitions

Each directional structure produces distinct surface behaviors and reconstruction patterns.

Technical Framework

Developed in Houdini using:

  • Guide Curve Systems

  • Vector Field Construction

  • Attribute Transfer

  • Volume-Based Direction Processing

  • Procedural Curve Advection

  • Density-Based Surface Reconstruction

Reflection

As the project developed, the focus gradually shifted away from embroidery aesthetics toward directional organization and structural reconstruction.

The system became less about simulating handcrafted appearance and more about investigating how procedural directional behaviors can generate coherent surface structures from accumulated linear elements.
